The St Patrick’s Day Parade has been running in Thurles for over 20 years and has grown in size and popularity over the years and continues to be well supported by our local businesses and community organisations during all this time.
In the early years Thurles Urban District Council or UDC provided essential supports of the parade in terms of logistical expertise and resources and has enabled the town of Thurles to have over 20 years of enjoyable and successful parades for this important day of national celebration. Thurles UDC established a sub-committee of the council of local volunteers to oversee important aspects of putting on our St Patrick’s Day parade. The volunteer committee undertook behind the scenes work involving the issuing of invitations to participants in the parade, encouraging the involvement of local schools and clubs and community organisations, arranging suitable insurances, dealing with important issues of crowd safety and liaison with An Garda, publicity and Public Relations, Parade formats and timing issues.
Today the St Patrick’s Day Parade is still organised and run by a volunteer committee with the support of the newly established Municipal District Council, the committee continues to have the valued support of Local businesses in the area and Community organisations and our committee undertakes it’s functions with the same ethos of years gone by, to provide an enjoyable and entertaining day of celebration on our national day of celebration and to showcase Thurles and our surrounding communities.
